Dr. Srikanth, chairman of Shrihitha Hospitals, a renowned physician, also warns against this, “Eating at midnight disrupts the body’s natural digestive process, which causes the metabolism to become weak. More importantly, it leads to weight gain.”

Side effects of eating at night:

  1. Sleep disturbance: Eating food late at night often causes late sleep. You can’t fall asleep at what time you naturally fall asleep. It disrupts the sleep cycle. Psychiatrists say, “Inability to sleep properly and not sleeping at a certain time can cause mental disorders like depression and anxiety.”
  2. Effect on Digestion: Consuming too much food or junk foods at night can cause stomach acidity and other digestive problems. “To promote better digestion, opt for a light meal in the evening to avoid gastric discomfort,” advises gastroenterologists.
  3. Weight gain : The body’s metabolism slows down at night, making it less efficient at burning calories. Nutritionists say “midnight eating can lead to weight gain because excess calories are stored as fat.” He said.
  4. Impact on mental health : Disturbed sleep and irregular eating patterns can aggravate mental disorders. Increases the risk of anxiety and depression. “Keeping a consistent eating schedule is crucial to stabilize mood and promote mental well-being,” added Dr. Srikanth.
  5. Increase in blood pressure: Eating late, sleeping late increases blood pressure. It also increases the risk of diabetes. Dr. Srikanth says, “Midnight eating habits can cause cardiovascular problems.” He said.

Late night hunger pangs: Although many people feel the urge to eat late night snacks, it is essential to address hunger pangs. Dr. Srikanth says, “Before you think about eating, assess whether you are really hungry or just want to eat.” Said that.

1. Know hunger: Decide if you really need food or if other things are triggering your cravings. “It is important to eat carefully before indulging in midnight snacks. Also identify whether your body has hunger cues.” He said.

2. Choose wisely: Choose fiber-rich snacks to keep you satiated and improve digestion. “Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your late-night snacks to curb hunger…and help improve health.” He said.

3. Avoid excess carbohydrates: Avoid heavy carbohydrates that spike blood sugar levels and contribute to weight gain. “Reduce sugary and processed food intake at night to avoid fluctuations in blood glucose levels,” advises Dr Srikanth. Importance of Moderation: While occasional overeating of late night snacks is not harmful, moderation is key to maintaining a balanced digestive system in the body. “Occasional indulgence is acceptable, but frequent late-night eating can cause long-term problems.” He said.
