Mahalanobis, founder of the Indian Statistical Institute and pioneer of modern statistics in India.
Hyderabad, June 30 : The C.R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS), located on the University of Hyderabad campus, celebrated National Statistics Day 2025 with a vibrant program honoring Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, founder of the Indian Statistical Institute and pioneer of modern statistics in India.
The event witnessed a strong message from Chief Guest Shri M. Kodanda Reddy, Chairman of the Telangana State Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission. He emphasized how statistical planning shaped India’s economic progress, from Nehru’s era to Dr. Manmohan Singh’s reforms, highlighting milestones like Indira Gandhi’s land reforms and the Green Revolution.
Shri Reddy drew attention to Telangana’s growth in paddy production, citing 277 lakh metric tons from 127 lakh acres, and linked it to historical policy decisions backed by data. He also expressed concern over declining financial discipline, rising electoral costs, and urged greater public awareness about the role of statistics.
Guest speaker Shri M. Gopalakrishna, IAS (Retd.), celebrated India’s leadership in statistical science, recalling Dr. C.R. Rao’s global contributions alongside Prof. Mahalanobis. He highlighted how statistics empower governance—from planning and defense to pandemic response and education.
Both speakers called for enhancing statistical literacy, especially among youth, and stressed the value of data-driven decision-making for inclusive and sustainable development.
